The short version

Syntax saves your learning progress so you can pick up where you left off. It has no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies, and it doesn’t sell your data. Weekly leagues show your XP under an automatically generated learner alias. You can download or delete everything at any time.

Signing in

You can sign in with an email address and password or with Google.

• Email and password. Your email address and name are stored. Your password is never stored: what’s kept is a scrambled version that can’t be turned back into your password, and it’s checked against what you type when you sign in.
• Google. Google tells us your account ID, email address and name, and those are stored, along with the sign-in tokens Google issues. We never see your Google password, and we don’t use Google to read anything else about you.

Whichever you use, Syntax keeps a record of each way you can sign in, so one person’s progress stays in one place. It also keeps a record of each device you’re signed in on, including its IP address and browser type. That’s used to keep your account secure and to sign devices out, and each record stops working 30 days after you last used that device. Signing out of a device removes its record.

You can use every lesson without signing in. Nothing is saved to an account until you do.

What is saved to your account

• Which activities you’ve completed, and when your reviews are due
• Your daily goal, the course you picked, and the reason for learning you chose in the intro
• Your coins, reward and purchase history, saved streak freezes and multipliers, multiplier expiry, learning time zone, protected streak dates, and weekly league results
• Your achievements, when you unlocked them, the counts they are based on (such as levels finished with full accuracy and the local time of day you finished them), and the profile banner you chose
• Code you’ve written in exercises and projects
• Concepts you’ve bookmarked
• Placement and test-out results
• Problem reports you send, including the code you had open at the time
• Your sign-in details, as described above

These are kept for as long as you have an account, and are used only to run Syntax for you: saving your place, scheduling reviews and fixing problems you report.

What stays on your device

Sound and voice settings, and a copy of your code drafts so your work survives a lost connection. Your browser stores these; clearing your site data removes them.

Cookies

Syntax sets only the cookies it needs to keep you signed in. There are no advertising, analytics or third-party tracking cookies, which is why there’s no cookie banner.

Where your code runs

Your code runs inside your own browser, in a sandbox. It isn’t sent anywhere to be run. To run Python, SQL and C++, your browser downloads the language engines from jsDelivr, a public content network, so jsDelivr sees an ordinary download request from your device.

Who can see it

Only you can see your code and detailed activity history. Signed-in learners in your league can see your weekly XP and rank under a generated alias; your name, email and account ID are not shown. The person who runs Syntax can read problem reports, so they can fix what you reported. A few services handle data on Syntax’s behalf and use it for nothing else:

• Cloudflare hosts the site and stores the data. Cloudflare runs servers worldwide, so your data may be processed outside your country.
• Resend sends the confirmation and password-reset emails, so it sees your email address and the message.
• Google handles the sign-in, if you choose to sign in with it.

Syntax will share data with anyone else only if the law requires it.

Children

You need to be at least 13 to make an account. If you’re under 18, check with a parent or guardian first. If you believe a child under 13 has made an account, get in touch and it will be deleted.

Your rights

You can see, download, correct and delete what Syntax holds about you. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how it’s used, and to complain to your data protection authority. Syntax is run from Spain, where that’s the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos.

• Download it. Open Account and choose Download my data. You get everything saved to your account as one file.
• Delete it. Open Account and choose Delete my account. That permanently erases your account and everything listed above that is saved to it. It takes effect immediately and can’t be undone.
• Anything else. Get in touch using the details below.

Changes

If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes too, and anything significant will be announced in the app before it takes effect.
