The short version
Syntax is a free place to learn to code. Use it to learn, be decent, and don’t try to break it. Your code is yours. The lessons are provided as they are, and Syntax can’t promise they’re perfect or that the site will always be up.
Agreeing to these terms
By using Syntax or making an account, you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
Who can use Syntax
You need to be at least 13 to make an account. If you’re under 18, or under the age of adulthood where you live, a parent or guardian needs to agree to these terms for you.
Your account
Keep your password to yourself; you’re responsible for what happens on your account. Give a real email address so you can reset your password. You can delete your account at any time from Account.
Using Syntax fairly
Please don’t:
- try to get into other people’s accounts, or into parts of Syntax you aren’t meant to reach
- overload, attack or probe the site, or use the code runner to attack anyone else
- copy the lessons in bulk, or scrape or resell them
- send problem reports that are abusive, or that contain other people’s personal information
- use Syntax for anything illegal
If you find a security problem, please report it privately using the contact details below instead of exploiting it.
Your code
Code you write on Syntax belongs to you. You let Syntax store it and show it back to you, which is all it’s used for. Code you include in a problem report may be read so the problem can be fixed.
Your code runs in your own browser. You’re responsible for what you write and run, and for any code you copy out of Syntax and use elsewhere.
The lessons
The lessons, exercises, projects, Bit and the Syntax name and logo belong to Syntax. You may use them to learn, and you’re welcome to reuse the short code examples in your own programs. Please don’t republish the lessons themselves.
Syntax is built with open-source software, which keeps its own licences. See Credits and licences.
No guarantees
Syntax is provided free, “as is” and “as available”. Care goes into the lessons, but they may contain mistakes, and completing them isn’t a qualification or a promise of any job or result. The site may change, pause or lose features, and occasionally be unavailable.
To the extent the law allows, Syntax isn’t liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data or lost profits arising from your use of the site. Nothing here limits rights you have by law that can’t be limited, such as your rights as a consumer.
Ending your use
You can stop using Syntax and delete your account whenever you like. An account that breaks these terms may be suspended or deleted; where it’s reasonable, you’ll be told first.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated as Syntax grows. The date at the top will change, and anything significant will be announced in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Syntax after that, you’re agreeing to the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Spain, and disputes about them go to the courts of Spain. If you use Syntax as a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in, and you can also bring a claim in the courts there.
